The Indoor Lighting Standard: The European standard EN 12464-1 for Offices

It's scientifically proven that good lighting makes people perform better. This results in better positioning, less eye strain and, of course, better vision. For spaces where visual communication is particularly important, such as offices and educational venues, the average cylindrical illumination maintained should not be less than 500 lx, unified glare rating should not be less than 19, and color rendering index should be higher than 80.

Office lighting has high requirements for Illuminance,UGR and color rendering index CRI to meet employees' visual needs and work efficiency. The standard of office lighting illumination mainly depends on the illumination requirements of the working surface. Generally speaking, the illumination requirement of the working surface is between 300 and 500 lux (lx). In addition, there are certain requirements for lighting brightness in local working areas, usually not less than 500lx. For office lighting, UGR is generally required to be below 19 to ensure sufficient lighting quality and visual comfort.

Color rendering index (CRI) is a measure of the color rendering of a light source and an important parameter for evaluating the quality of a light source. For office lighting, the CRI is generally required to be above 80 to ensure the authenticity and recognition of the color of the object. Light sources with high color rendering index can better restore natural colors and provide clearer and more realistic visual effects, thereby improving employees' work efficiency and reading quality.

These three parameters must be paid attention to

The luminous intensity per square metre (Lux)

The unified glare rating(UGR value)

The color rendering index(CRI Ra value)

To give you an idea of the standards within certain workspaces, below is a summary of the Lux, UGR and Ra values for various work environment areas:
